Good but not great. A athiest’s indirect iconoclastic view on ‘pure consciousness’ tantamount to God. There are definitely some great points in this book. Takeaways? Yes. Memorable? No. It’s a book you read and reference.

choiceless awareness sounds alien in the modern world, where life is viewed as nothing but choices, and happiness is thought to be reached by making good ones instead of bad ones. it’s hard to realize that the best choices make themselves. the rationale behind not-doing is simple: one thing has nothing to do but be itself. therefore, we have nothing to do but be ourselves. that is the essence of not doing.

Puzo is THAT guy. Not only a classic in Gangster fiction, but also a captivating page turner. Understand Don Corleone in all his entirety and leave the movie for later.
in the meantime, you mean to tell me these are the same person?

On the left, we are looking at Michael Corleone, third son of Don Corlone and Italian mobster. On the right, we are seeing none other than Tony Montana aka Scarface aka Cuban refugee turned Miami Drug lord. The ability of cinema to be able to take one man and stretch him across difference races...is absolutely insane to me.

Had to drag myself through misogynistic, racist drivel from a privileged white man who bums around France. I could not relate to his attempt at a miserable existence, but I could attest his consternation concerning his freedom. This was a reoccurring theme and showed miserably throughout his frivolous and blithe behavior as he tries to escape from the clutches of the consequences. Between memoir-inspired prose and stream of consciousness, it was rubbish. The only selling point is that it was banned in the U.S.

I am a free man – and i need my freedom. i need to be alone. i need to ponder my shame and my depair in seclusion. i need the sunshine and the paving stone of the streets without companions, without conversation, face to face with myself, with only the music of my heart for company. what do you want from me? when i have something to say, i put it in print. when i have something to give, i give it.

Great story and poetically written. From a sociological standpoint, extremely fascinating.
Memorable but would not read or refer to it again.
